memoQ benefits for individual translators

Translation leverage

memoQ offers a number of powerful functions that enable you to reuse previous translations. These technologies include translation memories and memoQ’s unique LiveDocs corpora. Statistical machine translation also allows the reuse of existing translations.
  • Translation memory
Translation memories are collections of matching source and target sentences or text segments. All the work you do while working in memoQ is stored in a translation memory. Then, when a similar sentence shows up, or you translate a similar document, or an update of the previously translated document, you see and can quickly use the previous translation of identical or similar source sentences. memoQ employs highly efficient algorithms for matching the document to be translated with segments in the translation memory. Aside from significant time and costs savings, this also helps to improve the quality of the final translation. Reports show the productivity gains from using translation memories.
  • LiveDocs corpora
LiveDocs is a set of features allowing integrated access to reference materials. You can quickly insert already translated documents into LiveDocs corpora, no matter whether they were translated in a translation tool or they are only available as two documents, for example in Microsoft Word format. You do not have to prepare the alignment, just insert the reference materials and start working on online aligned reference materials with relevant matches for your text. If the initial alignment is not correct, you can fix it on the fly. This way you can get productive immediately and you only work on reference material that gives you relevant matches for your text. Reports show the productivity gains from using LiveDocs corpora. You can see how many sentences in the text match your inserted materials.
  • Machine translation
memoQ is integrated with a number of machine translation engines including Google MT, Microsoft Bing MT, LetsMT, Kantan MT, Crosslang Gateway MT, You can configure memoQ to see results from these engines as you type. We also provide a software development kit that allows other MT vendors to integrate their engine with memoQ. Asia Online is also integrated with memoQ, but only when using the memoQ server.

Quality management is crucial to the translation process. memoQ offers a range of functions to help you improve quality, check consistency and ensure the use of the correct terminology.
  • Quality management
memoQ improves the quality of your target texts by automatically detecting some translation errors: such as number and number format-related errors, inconsistent translations, wrongly inserted translation memory matches, erroneous use of terminology, punctuation, capitalization, formatting and whitespace errors. These QA tests are customizable, can be used for the translation memory as well as actual documents, and can be run at any stage in the process. The QA functions also offer an easy and intuitive way of finding and fixing errors, as well as ignoring anything that is not relevant.
  • Terminology management
You can use term bases to ensure that the correct term is used consistently. You can quickly add terms to your term bases or import glossaries from Microsoft Excel, CSV, TBX or MultiTerm XML formats, and check if terms have been used correctly. Term bases also speed up your work as matches are automatically suggested and quickly inserted. memoQ is also integrated with external terminology tools such as TaaS. memoQ's term recognition tool also works well with morphologically complex languages.
  • Consistency
The bigger the project, the harder it is to ensure consistency. Terminology and recurring phrases must be applied consistently. memoQ helps you achieve this: you can import, use and quickly build your own term bases and glossaries. You can also indicate if a term is forbidden in the target language and memoQ will check all occurrences, and you can immediately see term candidates through the amazing automatic concordance and term extraction features. Find and replace can also be used on multiple files at the same time. All of these are available in a collaborative setting. The search tool can be used to quickly find particular expressions in your translation memories and LiveDocs corpora – and if these are big enough, memoQ can even highlight the suggested translation.

Smarter translation

memoQ offers a variety of tools which can help you get your translation work done faster and better.
  • Project templates
Project templates greatly speed up the process of starting work in memoQ. memoQ comes with two built-in templates that allow you to get started with the tool in just five minutes, but you can also learn the ins and outs of memoQ and configure your own custom templates. Templates define your languages, your project naming conventions, your translation memories, term bases, LiveDocs corpora, and other resources. You can also automate recurring tasks such as project analysis.
  • Automatic translation and numbers
Translators come across many things which are always translated in a certain way, as well as  phrases which are always left in their original language. Similarly, numbers, dates and times are formatted differently from one locale to another. memoQ allows the automatic translation of certain phrases, numbers, dates, times and much more. It also allows you to specify certain phrases and words which should not be translated. You can quickly convert all number-only segments into the target language and also automatically convert catalog-like text such as "100% cotton" into the target language through fragment assembly.
  • The Muse
The Muse learns from your translation memories and LiveDocs and works by automatically completing a phrase as you start to type it. It works in a similar way to autocomplete functionality on mobile phones, except it autocompletes with your translations and term base entries instead. Translators have reported that this dramatically improves their translation speed.
  • memoQ web search
When researching terminology, you probably search for the same expression on multiple sites and in multiple online glossaries. memoQ allows you to automate this process: configure your search providers and instantly search all your preferred online resources at once by selecting the expression and pressing Shift+F3.

You can use memoQ as your single tool for translation and review. memoQ supports the bilingual formats and package formats of other translation tools so you can seamlessly work with customers who use a different tool.
  • Standards
Standards are important as long as they empower language workers and not create extra work. memoQ works with a number of important technical standards such as XLIFF, TMX, TBX, SRX and Unicode. We also support XLIFF:doc and TIPP packages from the Interoperability Now! initiative.
  • Compatibility with SDL Trados
If your customer works with SDL Trados 5.5, 6.5 or 7.0 or SDL Trados Studio 2009, 2011 or 2014, you can use memoQ to work with almost all of the relevant file formats. memoQ can import and export TTX – the native file format of SDL Trados TagEditor, SDLXLIFF – the version of XLIFF used in SDL Trados Studio, and SDLPPX – SDL package files. It is also possible to import and export bilingual Trados documents. SDL Trados-generated TMX files are imported with a special filter to minimize data loss during migration, and you can also import and export SDL MultiTerm XML files.
  • Compatibility with other tools
If your customers are using STAR Transit, Wordfast, GlobalLink, or SDL Worldserver, memoQ offers you to process jobs coming in these formats and deliver to customers as if you were using these tools. You only need to learn how to use memoQ. You can also work with customers using other tools through support for the XLIFF format.

Reliability and support

We recognize that memoQ is a crucial tool in your daily work. We also recognize that it is important your tools are reliable, and if something does go wrong, you must be able to get timely and effective support.
  • Constant enhancements
We recognize that as more customers put their faith in us, we need to be constantly improving the quality and robustness of our software. It does not matter how many features are added if the software has a lot of bugs. We do everything possible to improve the quality of our software. Our development and product lifecycle professionals are specially trained to increase the quality of our software. We have separate teams to manage quality assurance and development. Our pre-release testing process is very thorough and involves a number of quality assurance approaches, and 80% of the software defects reported to support are resolved within one month.
  • Support
If you encounter any problem, a team of eight people is here to help you. The front line support team answers support queries from 8 AM Central European Time to 5 PM US Eastern Time on Monday to Friday and from 10 AM to 6 PM Central European Time on Saturday. If support requests reach a peak, an additional eight people come on board to help out. We also answer emergency support queries on Sundays. For more complex support issues, there is also a number of people who work on second level and developer support.
  • Knowledge Base and other resources
Even though our support team is quick to respond it is always good to be able to check whether there is an existing solution to your issue. The searchable Knowledge Base offers information on known issues and their solutions, as well as tips and tricks and other helpful information. The online training, the extensive help system and the abundant user guides and videos always help you find the information you are looking for.

Collaboration and review

Translation is very collaborative work. We recognize this and provide resources to help you work effectively with your customers and outsource work to your colleagues.
  • Working with translation companies
memoQ allows you to receive and deliver files which come from memoQ or other translation tools, such as SDL Trados Studio, SDL Worldserver, STAR Transit or Wordfast. The level of integration can be even greater when the customer is using memoQ server and you are using memoQ. With memoQ translator pro, you can also work on collaborative projects on memoQ servers and share translation memories, term bases and other resources with others, or translate and review at the same time.
  • Working with colleagues
Sometimes translators need to work collaboratively on projects which would benefit from real-time sharing. You have two ways to do this: either you can share translation memories and term bases free of charge through Language Terminal or you can use a memoQ cloud server. You only pay for the time you use the memoQ cloud server, and you can always download all your data. You can connect to the memoQ cloud server using your memoQ translator pro license, but the memoQ cloud server is licensed separately.
  • Sharing resources
There are numerous resources in memoQ, from translation memories, to segmentation rules, term bases and other resources, all of which can be shared among colleagues. Using Language Terminal, translators are free to share translation memories and term bases and collaborate in real time. Translators working in the same combinations or specializations may benefit from sharing segmentation rules or auto-translate lists. Bilingual documents, translation memories and term bases can be shared with colleagues working in memoQ or other tools. You can share other memoQ resources and even entire projects among memoQ users.
  • Review processes
Where there is translation, usually there is review as well. If your reviewer uses another translation tool, you can export the document to XLIFF and receive an XLIFF. If your reviewer does not use a translation tool, you can export into a bilingual Microsoft Word file and receive it back. In both cases, the update of your bilingual document is automatic, and changes are automatically tracked by memoQ, so your translation memories also stay up-to-date. If your reviewer just edited the target document, don't worry. memoQ's unique monolingual review feature allows you to quickly compare the changes and implement them in your translation document, with very little manual work.
