Patent Localization Challenges at ILCT

Patents are often full of repetitive terminologies, phrases, and even entire sentences. It would be a crucial advantage for a translator to re-use previous translations.

Before implementing memoQ, ILCT’s translators would receive a terminology list to search through while translating the documents. For each technical term, they would need to manually look it up in the terminology list. This step is error-prone and burdensome. Likewise, turnaround times for all projects are getting shorter, rendering manual translation inefficient since it is time-consuming and makes maintaining consistency difficult which leads to errors or inaccuracy.

Nowadays, translation management systems play a significant role in the translation industry. ILCT’s goals were threefold: to keep up with technological advancements, to reduce turnaround time while maintaining translation quality and consistency, and to maintain a centralized management of translation memories. ILCT decided to look for a TMS to meet their criteria. They found memoQ to be “a powerful tool for localization. Its user interface is very user-friendly, well-designed and easy to work with when compared with other solutions. Additionally, memoQ’s support team is very responsive and helpful.”

After introducing memoQ to their translation workflow, the ILCT team can now work with built-in translation memories, term bases, and LiveDocs, which enables a smooth collaboration between translator and reviewer. When using memoQ, they can check if any content has been previously translated and they can re-use these translations. This significantly cuts back on the amount of time they spend on translation. Therefore, memoQ is a must-have tool in the translation workflow for ILCT.

Impact

  • Improved translation quality and consistency
  • Decreased translation turnaround time (by up to 30%)
  • Centralized translation management
  • Smoother in-house collaboration of translators and reviewers
